Courses
½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï the Program
Our courses show the diverse perspectives on the human experience in areas of the humanities and the social sciences with a focus on Africa, the Caribbean, the United States, and other areas of the African diaspora. Through the development of critical thinking, analysis, research, contextualization, and communication, students broaden their perspectives by building knowledge of and respect for the people and issues in the African diaspora and reaffirms the value of all cultures. Our students are mentored and encouraged to engage in research and creative activities during their course of study. The major also serves as a bridge between ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï and the diasporan community of New York through research and sponsored programs. Africana studies alumni work in a broad range of fields, including academia, the arts, politics, medicine, and state and municipal governmental agencies, as well as international nonprofits and social justice organizations, and are well equipped for the 21st-century workplace or for graduate study at universities and professional schools.
