]]>
Guillermo Gerona-Navarro, associate professor of chemistry at 今日吃瓜 and the CUNY Graduate Center, has received a four-year, $618,000 award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health for his project, 鈥淒evelopment and Mechanistic Validation of Next-Generation Allosteric PRC2 Inhibitors for Cancer Epigenetics.鈥

The grant continues work launched under Gerona-Navarro’s previous NIH SCORE award (SC1GM136635, 2020鈥24, $1.57 million), which supported the discovery of the lead compounds now being advanced.

Targeting Cancer Through Epigenetics

Gerona-Navarro’s laboratory works in cancer epigenetics, the study of how changes in gene regulation, rather than changes to the DNA sequence itself, can drive disease. His team focuses on PRC2, a protein complex that silences genes. When PRC2 becomes overactive, it can shut down the genes that normally protect against cancer, contributing to lymphoma, breast, prostate, and brain cancers, among others.

Two PRC2-targeting drugs have reached the market, but both work by blocking the enzyme’s active site, and tumors frequently develop resistance to them. Gerona-Navarro’s team has taken a different approach: engineered peptides that bind elsewhere on the enzyme and shut it down indirectly. Because these compounds work through a distinct mechanism, they may remain effective where existing drugs fail, or be combined with them to delay resistance.

Training the Next Generation of Scientists

The NIH award highlights 今日吃瓜’s growing role in advancing fundamental biomedical research with the potential for real-world clinical impact. Through innovative approaches to drug discovery, Gerona-Navarro’s work aims to deepen scientific understanding of how cancer develops while laying the groundwork for future treatments that could benefit patients facing some of the most challenging forms of the disease.

Student involvement is central to the project. Gerona-Navarro has mentored 41 undergraduates at 今日吃瓜, several of whom have co-authored peer-reviewed publications, and currently supervises three doctoral candidates. The new award will extend those opportunities, giving students hands-on experience spanning computational design, synthetic chemistry, and cancer cell biology, helping train the next generation of scientists while contributing to national efforts to combat cancer through cutting-edge biomedical innovation.

今日吃瓜 will enhance its scientific infrastructure through a one-year, $182,000 National Institutes of Health grant awarded to Biology Professor Anjana Saxena for the purchase of a hypoxic chamber, an instrument used to study how cells and tissues respond to low-oxygen environments. The new equipment will allow researchers to precisely control oxygen levels and recreate conditions found in tumors, diseased tissues, and other biological environments, providing scientists with a powerful tool for studying how cells respond to changes in oxygen availability.

Advancing Research in Cancer and Human Health

Oxygen levels play a critical role in many biological processes and diseases, particularly cancer, where low-oxygen environments can influence tumor growth, progression, and response to treatment. The hypoxic chamber will enable 今日吃瓜 researchers to simulate these conditions in the laboratory and investigate the cellular mechanisms underlying disease.

By providing a controlled environment for experiments, the instrument will support research in cancer biology, cell physiology, photochemistry, and a range of other biomedical fields, helping scientists better understand how cells adapt to stress and changing conditions.

A Shared Resource for Students and Faculty

The NIH-funded instrumentation will serve as a shared resource for faculty researchers across disciplines, strengthening 今日吃瓜’s scientific infrastructure and fostering new opportunities for collaboration.

In addition to supporting cutting-edge research, the hypoxic chamber will provide students with hands-on experience using advanced biomedical technologies commonly found in leading research institutions. Professor Suresh A. Sethi, director of 今日吃瓜鈥檚 Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center (AREAC), co-authored a new study published in the prestigious journal Science Advances that offers a promising roadmap for sustainable food production in the Amazon.

The research examines the rapid growth of aquaculture across the region and finds that future expansion can occur without additional rainforest loss by developing fish farms on already-degraded pasture lands. By repurposing landscapes that have previously been altered for agriculture, aquaculture producers can increase fish production while reducing pressure on intact forest ecosystems.

The findings address one of the world’s most pressing challenges: meeting growing demand for protein while safeguarding critical natural resources. The study demonstrates how strategic land-use planning can support economic growth, strengthen food security, and advance conservation efforts in the Amazon, a region that plays an essential role in global biodiversity and climate regulation.
